AICPA Request to Contact IRS
CPAs across the country should contact the IRS to emphasize the burdens CPAs, CPA firms and businesses will face if the IRS fully implements its proposed Tax Preparer Registration program. Please visit the AICPA’s web site to access a sample e-mail that you can use to contact the IRS. You will also find other resources on the issue at this link.

New Tax Form 140X-NC
Arizona has a new tax form, updated Thursday, Aug. 5, that our member Ed Zollars let us know about. It is Arizona Form 140X-NC, Individual Amended Return for Non-Conformity Issues Only. There is no word on how quickly the various software providers will get this loaded, so for now Zollars suggests using a 140X for a simpler fix.

Volunteers at the Aug. 12 seminar-How to Start Your Own Firm or Give Your Existing Firm a Kick-Start.
(Left to right): Selina Ashworth, Lisa Johnston, Peggy Ullmann, Jay Lohman and Pallav Acharya pose for the camera after providing great advice to CPAs.

Read a Book, Discuss it and Have Fun on Sept. 21
If you have attended any of our book club meetings, you have learned: the secrets to building a network of key contacts, how to be an extreme leader, bad workplace habits to avoid, and how to ask the right questions. Attend our Sept. 21 book club meeting in person or as a webinar from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., where we will discuss, The Way We're Working Isn't Working: The Four Forgotten Needs That Energize Great Performance by Tony Schwartz. By using a series of quadrants describing the emotional workings of both employees and companies, Schwartz argues that much is lost by constantly pushing employees to be more productive in less time and with fewer resources. Attending the Sept. 21 ASCPA Book Club meeting may also qualify you for one hour of CPE. If you missed our discussion on Just Ask Leadership by Gary Cohen on July 13, read the post on this book.

Nominate a CPA for the 2011 Public Service Award
Do you know a CPA who does great work for the community? Nominate them for the ASCPA Public Service Award. Self nominations are also encouraged. Don’t be shy.  This is a great opportunity for you to get the word out about the wonderful organizations you support. Download the nomination form.
The deadline is Nov. 15.

Extreme Makeover: Resume Edition – Sept. 29
The 2010 job market is unique from both an economic standpoint and from the tools candidates need to stand out from the crowd during their job search. The rules have absolutely changed. This fast-paced session will spend little time on the basics, favoring a review of changes in expectations regarding resumes, new trends in corporate interview questions (and what types of answers the recruiters are looking for), and what candidates can do to stand out from the crowd. Eric Knott has extensive recruiting leadership experience and provides feedback regarding what candidates must have in their resumes and the current hot buttons for corporate recruiters and hiring managers. Join us for the face-to-face program or the live webinar on Sept. 29 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Best of all, it’s free for members.

ASCPA Brings Game of LIFE to Big Brothers Big Sisters

For the fourth year in a row, ASCPA volunteers have brought financial literacy training to the young people at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Phoenix. Using a modified version of the Milton Bradley board game, Life, CPA volunteers play banker as “Littles” face decisions like whether to go to college and buying a home, while their “Bigs” offer guidance and advice. The process of playing the game gives the volunteers a platform to start a dialogue about saving money, debt and other financial literacy topics. A young lady named Shay won this year and is pictured above with her “Big” and ASCPA staffers Traci Baker and Cynthia Figueroa. The Society will bring the game of Life event to the Tucson Big Brother Big Sisters August 28.  For more information or to get involved, please contact Traci Baker at (602) 324-4745.
