2010 Scholarship Extravaganza
Saturday, May 1, 2010
JW Marriott Hotel

John Misitigh, Chair
2010 Scholarship Extravaganza

The Houston CPA Society's most ambitious educational assistance programs are the Accounting Scholarships and CPAs Helping Schools. Since 2005, the Society has primarily funded these programs with the net proceeds from each year's Scholarship Extravaganza. Over the last five years, the event has generated over $600,000 that has funded some 145 Accounting scholarships and numerous Kindergarten through Grade 12 programs.

This year's gala affair will be Saturday, May 1, 2010 in the elegant JW Marriott Ballroom (Westheimer & Sage), and is shaping up to be as fun-filled and entertaining as any of our more recent extravaganzas. In addition, we are pleased to have as Honorary Co-chairs, Sam and Norma Gainer. Sam is the senior partner of Gainer, Donnelly & Desroches LLP, a Galleria area firm employing 150 individuals. Sam and Norma are world-wide travelers enabling the multi-talented Sam to accumulate a remarkable photography collection exhibited around Houston and key to his firm's annual calendar display.
Tickets for this limited seating event are $150 per person; sponsorship levels begin at $500. Download a one-page sponsorship/ticket form, or go to May 1, 2010 on the web site CPE Calendar  for registration options.

The Scholarship Extravaganza Committee is working tirelessly to get the word out to all Society members encouraging them to participate in this important occasion. For the first time, the committee will conduct a telethon to personally contact as many Society members as possible. Scheduled to begin in March and coupled with an individual mailing of printed invitations, Society volunteers will call members and provide event and sponsor information as well as information on the event's two beneficiary programs.

Along with a great line-up of Silent Auction items that will appeal to a variety of interests, raffle prizes will be awarded to seven lucky winners.   So mark your calendars  May 1 at the JW Marriott Hotel for a fabulous evening that will benefit two great Society programs…and ultimately the profession. Remember, buying a ticket will be your entry fee to great food, wonderful prizes, entertainment and opportunities to socialize with friends and acquaintances.

How To Utilize And Contribute To Social Media!
The Houston CPA Society is now on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter! If you aren't active on these websites, now is the time to get involved!

1. STAY ACTIVE!
Staying active is the most important contribution you can make. Social media requires active participation within the community. It's an act of both give and take. While it's perfectly fine to be a lurker, if something strikes your interest, don't be afraid to voice your opinions and share your knowledge of the subject. Want to learn more about something? Ask a question. With social media, the community is there in an effort to help you benefit from not only the web, but life.

2. SPREAD LINK LOVE WITH FRESH CONTENT!
Did you read or write an article that was beneficial to your firm, operations or everyday life? SUBMIT IT TO THE GROUP! Spreading the "link love" is actually one of the best things you can do for social media. Not only does it help with creating connections, but for social media this is a great way for users to find great content. This is also another way to spread ideas that others might never have. Not only will other Society members appreciate the "love", but so will your audience.

3. TWEET WITH US!
Twitter informs your friends, family and colleagues what you're up to … in 140 characters or less! It's straight to the point and fun - what else could a person ask for? Follow tscpahouston to see the latest happenings with the Society!

So, what's there to lose? The Houston CPA Society Facebook Fan Page, LinkedIn Group and Tweets provide you with constant information about upcoming events, professional discussions and topics, and the opportunity to stay connected with other CPAs! Visit the websites, search for the Houston CPA Society and interact with fellow Society members. See you online!

Society Past President Achieves Gold

(l to r) Current Society President Kathy Ploch congratulates Tom Roberts, who served as 1982-1983 Society President, on his recognition as a 50-Year Licensee at the November 14 CPA Swearing-In Ceremony. Also on hand to extend their best wishes were Carol Warley, in her role as a TSCPA Executive Board member, and Ronnie Darden, chair ofthe Society's Membership Development Committee.

2010 Census Be A Volunteer
According to Mayor Anise Parker, the 2000 Census was approximately 20% lower than Houston's actual population, resulting in a loss of federal and state funding.  A complete census count in Houston will aid in creating additional City Council districts and allow redistricting for another Congressional seat. The Houston CPA Society supports participating in the Census as it relates to an accurate count.

A large army of volunteers is needed t complete an accurate count.  Visit HoustonCounts.org and click the volunteer tab to help fulfill the 6,000 volunteer hours needed to complete an accurate count. Help to provide Houston the representation it deserves.
